Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology refers to the study of the gastrointestinal (GI) Tract. The GIT is responsible for digesting and moving food, absorbing nutrients and removing waste from the body. The main components of the GIT are the Oesophagus, Stomach and Intestine.

Diseases of the GIT range from simple to complex such as, intestinal parasites, foreign bodies or Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV). Common Clinical Signsinclude Vomiting, Weight loss, Diarrhoea, Loss of Appetite, Poor Body Condition or Constipation.

GI disease can be Acute (short episodes of disease) or Chronic (persistent illness). Both forms of GI disease need medication and diet management to control symptoms. Diagnostic tests depend on the history and physical exam.

To accurately diagnose GI disease we carry out faecal floatation, Specific ELISA tests (fPLi, cPLi), radiographs, blood work and Imaging (radiographs and/or ultrasound)
